Malovishte
Situated at the foot of Baba Mountain, at about
twenty kilometers away from Bitola, it is the
only settlement within the National Park “Pel-
ister”. It has less than a hundred inhabitants, Lake Prespa, which you will remember for life. Stroll-
most of which are Vlachs. The village has a
beautifully preserved traditional Macedonian stone
houses on two or three floors, which spread together
on the mountain slope, resemble a small urban settle-
ment. When strolling along the narrow cobblestone
streets, if you are lucky to find an old man on a horse-
back, as we were, you would think that a time machine
took you back a hundred years ago when the village
lived in full swing. In the nineteenth century, the vil-
lage had more than two thousand inhabitants and it
was the new center that was inhabited by Vlachs from
Moskopole, from Gramos and from Epirus. There was a
rich cultural, economic and spiritual life in the village.
People were engaged in farming, weaving and trade.
There were two Greek and two Romanian schools and
almost every resident spoke two or three languages.
In 2014, the municipality of Bitola launched an ini-
tiative for building an ethno-campus in Malovishte. The
realization of this idea would be wonderful, because
this region would avoid imminent extinction, and tour-
ists would enjoy the unique old architecture which
would be preserved in this way. And all this would take
place deep in the thick nature that hides a rich fauna.
With such a beautiful location high in the moun-
tains you should definitely visit Malovishte and enjoy
memorable sights from some eight hundred meters

above the village. It would take you two hours of an
easy stroll through the rich forest, along the mountain
path to get to places where you will enjoy the view of
ing through the forest you will surely see fresh traces
of wild hosts. Moreover, this part of Baba Mountain is
not as frequented by hikers, so it is advisable to move
around in a larger group. On the other hand, the
thought that you are among the few who enjoy these
wild landscapes will undoubtedly increase your satis-
faction and impressions.
In summer, Baba Mountain will offer a generous
feast for its guests, so you will often see forest berries
such as raspberries and blueberries.
At about 2000 meters above sea level, there is the
monastery of “St.Spas”, situated at the highest altitude
in the area, which features a bell and a small temple.
It is a place where you will surely stay longer than
planned because, simply, one cannot get enough of the
divine views it offers. On one side is the indefinite view
of Prespa Lake, and on the other, fearing that it will re-
main overshadowed by the dark blue beauty, stands the
third largest mountain in our country, Baba Mountain,
and the peak Pelister, arrogantly emphasizing its heav-
enly height. Climb only another hundred meters and
you will be at the highest peak in the area, Vrteshka,
which stands at 2010 m.asl. From there you have a long
list of places that you need to recognize, such as Resen,
“Strezhevo” accumulation, Pelagonia, large number of
