that in these past years Macedonia progressed

CLEAN WATER IS NECESSARY FOR THE
HUMAN HEALTH AND WELLBEING
The integrated water management, based
on the principles of sustainable develop-
ment, is one of the important national
priorities of wastewater in the city of
Skopje. Currently this is the greatest and Funding, Construction and Operation of the Waste-
the most complex project which is being realized on
the level of this country and it has a unique national
and cross-border importance.
Constitutionally guaranteed right of every indi-
vidual in the world is access to clean drinking wa-
ter and access to sanitation systems that collect and
drain wastewater. It is a matter of one of the most
complex media of the environment, and at the same
time from financial point of view, it is one of the
most difficult chapter of the European legislation.
The increase of investments in the infrastructure
of the environment, with an emphasis on collection
and treatment of wastewater and supply of drinking
water, are obligations of this country for compliance
with the principles, priorities and requirements in
the Accession Partnership determined in the Coun-
cil Decision 2008 / 212 / EC from February 18, 2008.
The implementation of the legal obligations and
the accomplishment of the standards, particularly
in the part of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Di-
rective (91/271/EEC) and the Drinking Water Direc-
tive (98/82/EEC) represents a great challenge, pri-
marily from financial point of view. In this regard,
the treatment of wastewater from different sources
remains a great challenge for this country because
only 15% of the existing dwellings have treatment
of the generated wastewater. The larger cities have
not built wastewater treatment plant yet, however
in this field and the realized efforts should be
greeted.
Still, in order to transform this new regulation
framework into a constant tool, integrated and
efficient for the functioning of water management
in Macedonia, the need to strengthen the human
and economic capacities is still large.
there is an ongoing construction of such plants in
Prilep, in Gevgelija, etc. There is also an ongoing
realization of several new projects for wastewater
treatment. One of these projects is the Study for
water Treatment Plan in the city of Skopje, funded
by French Ministry of Economy and Finance. The
project is realized by the French company EGIS
in association with the local company BAR E.C.E.
which has many years of experience in design of mu-
nicipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants.
The basic goal of the Study is to provide optimal and
sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment,
and treatment of the sludge which provide achieve-
ment of the standards which in the long run will
provide promotion of the quality of the river Vardar.
The realization of this large project will positively
affect in the direction of adequate management of
water resources – wastewater, improvement of the
quality of media in the environment and the quality
of life as a whole, as well as an improvement of the
socio-economic climate. This is a basis for improve-
ment of the economic environment, opening of new
job positions, and an increase of the standard of life.
The location of the wastewater treatment plant is
Trubarevo, on the left side of the river Vardar, with-
in the Municipality of Gazi Baba. The population
which will be covered by the central Wastewater
Treatment Plant will be from 490,000 residents in
2030 and 518,000 in 2045. The station covers all ten
municipalities within the city of Skopje, that is, 82%
of the population will be covered with a service for
wastewater treatment until 2045.
