entered under the umbrella of the commu-
nist bloc, led by Russia. Hence, the Cuban-
American relations entered the sphere of the
“Cold War”, which would laterresult in the
greatest tightening of the relations between
the two blocs. On January 3, 1961, USA re-
voked the recognition of the communist Cu-
ban government and closed the Embassy in
Havana, which stayed closed until this year.
Later on, in April this same year, a paramili-
tary group of about 1.500 fighters of Cuban
origin, organized by USA, performed an un-
successful invasion of the Cuban Island, in
order to forcibly overthrow Castro’s regime,
an action known as “The Bay of Pigs Inva-
sion”. The crisis reached its peak in October
1962, when USA disclosed that Russia had
set Ballistic nuclear rockets onCuba’s terri-
tory, which tightened the relations not only
between USA and Cuba, but also entirely be-
tween the two world political blocs. Until the
end of the twentieth century, the relations
between USA and Cuba may be assessed as

tion that there are constant hostile spying
activities between the two countries, as well
as attempt for assassinations of senior polit-
ical officials. Similar as with Iran’s example, can be determined more easily. The open-

remained committed to its anti-American
doctrine and the wave of political inertia,
whereby both countries kept their tightened
relations and mutual restrictive sanctions.
This sticking to the “principles” would cost
Cuba a serious economic downturn, taking
into consideration that the fall of the “iron
curtain” caused fall of the interest and the
possibility for Russia to be a sponsor of the
Cuban state. This opened a new chapter in
the American-Cuban relations which start-
ed to warm up at the beginning of the 21st
century. The arrival of Barack Obama at the
position of President of the United States of
America, was a sign that America will start

to warm the relations with the traditional
enemies, butthe accomplishment of the
agreement on December 17th, as well as the
opening of the embassies in the middle of
this year, is a real turning point in the rela-
tions between these countries and closure of
one of the most difficult political issues in
the USA.
The Cuban and the Iranian issues are not
a closed book. Autocratic regimes still rule
there, where human rights are reduced to
a minimum, and there is practically no po-
litical freedom. Not always, yet usually, this
means economic and civilizational down-
turn, butof course the first step is the open-
ing of these economies, as a basic prerequi-
site for civilizational progress. It is exactly
for this reason why the reaching of these two
deals was a success of the world diplomatic
activity and a strong impulse of the doctrine
of globalization. The fall of the “Iron Cur-
tain” and the end of the “Cold War” marked
the new beginning in the world real politics.
The great world forces are no longer divided
into blocs, rather each country performs at
the world diplomatic scene, led by its own in-
terest, where the points of common interest
ness of the economies in the 21st century
caused an exponential growth of globaliza-
tion, whereby the cultures leave aside the
emotional, traditional differences, while the
economic and cultural cooperation comes
to the foreground. The world is ahead of
numerous challenges, however the closure
of such long-term challenges represents an
important milestone in the improvement
of mutual relations, which open a path to-
wards promotion of the civilizational ben-
efits.
