INITIATIVES Ever since the
implementation
of its Law on
Value Added Tax,
the Republic of
Macedonia has
been making VAT
return payments
to all foreign
legal and natural
entities, including
companies from
Croatia.

The Croatian
legislation
contains a
reciprocity condition that has not been made official by its competent bodies.
Hence, Macedonian companies cannot obtain VAT return on payments made in
Croatia.

Applying the reciprocity principle in making VAT return payments between
the two countries would increase the competitiveness of Corridor X, as
Macedonian transport providers would be more willing to take this motorway
when transiting to countries in Western Europe.

We sent a letter to the Croatian Chamber of Economy, in which we explain
this initiative and ask the Chamber to address relevant stakeholders for the
purpose of undertaking the required administrative and legal activities and
start implementing the reciprocity principle, an initiative launched four years
ago. This is in the best interest of the two countries’ trade relations and we do
expect a positive outcome.
