scape/ambience gets a strong emotion-
al charge and he becomes a protagonist
in the film. Based on the best traditions
of the American literary mythology, in
Cimino’s vision, the epic and the in-
timate become a part of a unique aes-
thetic expression, thereby creating a
film – a fresco.

Using the benefits from the suc-
cess of The Deer Hunter (winner of 5
Oscars), Cimino had the freedom and
budget to engage in an even more am-
bitious film challenge. Heaven’s Gate
(1980) is an atypical epic Western, a
monumental American saga which si-
multaneously will mark the creative
peak and beginning of the long agony
that inevitably leads to the end. The
film which will push the studio of the
United Artists to a bankruptcy is one of
the greatest commercial fiascos in the
history of film. It definitively marks the
end of the new American wave where a
larger group of authors manages to im-
pose their own vision using the benefits
from the fragile foundations of the Hol-
lywood system. In the 80’s the studios
and the corporations would once again
take over control in their own hands.

   Michael Cimino will record another
four movies and will write about twen-
ty unrealized screenplays. In 1996 he
withdrew from film and from the eyes
of the public. For the rest of his life he
wrote novels and he enjoyed and em-
braced life.
