water. They are divided only by the mountain
and its top Kajmakcalan, while on the east
side is the top Sokol and Dobro Pole, the site
of the worst horror during the Great War.

Nearby is the village of Budimirci with its
distinctive architecture. At about two hours
walk from this village you will get to “St. De-
metrius” monastery. The direction is marked
on a road sign, and the path leads along Bela
Reka. All along the path you will encounter
meadows rich in thyme and yarrow. The
monastery is located in what was once the
village of Trnovo making it known as the
Trnovo monastery. Recently hospices were
built in this monastery.

Together with the villages of South Mar-
iovo, such as Zovikj, Staravina, Grunishte
and some other, Gradeshnica and Budimirci
were also strong supporters of Greek politics
during the turmoil about a century ago. The
locals will also tell you that at the time of
the “old inhabitants”, the village had Greek
priests, and on some of the houses you can
still see stone tablets written in Greek lan-
guage and Greek alphabet.
